Is it possible to put electricity back in the grid via a wall socket?
Can you, in theory, take an energy source ie batteries etc and plug them into a wall socket without doing any damage to your own home? Would this lower your electric bill? I know batteries would cost money and would not be worth it, but in theory, would it work? And if you had a fluctuating power source (pretend you somehow wired your alternator in your car into the wall) how could you stop it from putting too much electricity back and damaging something?
Yes you can put electricity back into the electric system. People who have windmills hooked to their circuit panel have their meter spin backward and can potentially have the electric company pay them.
But it isn't that simple. You have to match the 60 Hz phase cycle of the electricity coming in. In Windmills they use the electric service coming in to power their field coils on the generator so when the wind turns the generator it is in phase automatically because the 60 Hz cycle from the company keeps the generator synchronized via of the field coil magnets. The generator just turns the armature coil and the power is regulated so that the windmill will only go the speed the field coils allow it to go.
Plus the power only comes out of the generator when the field coils energize every 60 th of a second...so the power is smoothed in. You need to tell the electric company so that they know you are generating power otherwise their workers could get hurt because they think the line is dead when working on it, yet your generator could energize their dead line
